The State House Diaspora Unit has facilitated the safe return of four Ugandan nationals from India, bringing home two adult women and two children after more than a decade of distress and prolonged stay abroad.
On Wednesday evening, January 28, 2026, the Deputy Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, Mr Henry Wabyona, accompanied by the Unit’s Liaison Officer, Mr Topher Matsiko, received the returnees upon arrival in Uganda.
The group comprises Ms Fiona Namuddu, Ms Rebecca Nakasaga, and two children aged eight and four years. The children were born in India and had not accessed formal education due to the challenging circumstances faced by the family during their stay.
The return was made possible under an Amnesty Scheme announced by the Government of India for foreign nationals who had overstayed their visas. The scheme allows affected individuals to exit India using an Expedited Exit Permit (EEP) without incurring financial penalties during the amnesty period running from September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026.
Through the intervention of the State House Diaspora Unit, working in close coordination with the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi, the necessary travel documentation was processed and air tickets facilitated to ensure the safe return of the Ugandan nationals.
Speaking at the reception, Mr. Wabyona described the effort as a humanitarian intervention aimed at restoring dignity and reuniting families.
“This is a humanitarian intervention aimed at restoring dignity, reuniting families, and giving our fellow citizens a fresh start in life,” he said. “The two children, who were born in India, have not had access to formal education due to the circumstances they faced abroad. Government will work with relevant institutions and partners to explore appropriate support mechanisms for their reintegration.”
The successful return underscores the Government of Uganda’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens wherever they are and highlights the strong cooperation between Uganda and India in addressing migration and consular challenges.
The State House Diaspora Unit’s mandate is to ensure that every Ugandan abroad is safe, visible, connected, engaged, and empowered. Ugandans facing distress while overseas are encouraged to reach out to their respective diplomatic missions or directly to the State House Diaspora Unit for guidance and support.
Mr. Wabyona extended appreciation to His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Uganda High Commission in India, and all partners whose efforts contributed to the successful return of the four Ugandans.
