KAMPALA, Uganda — Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested three additional suspects in connection with the robbery of more than Shs45 million from officials of Riverside Forex Bureau in Nsambya last month, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to five.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the latest arrests follow ongoing investigations into the May 6 robbery in which assailants riding motorcycles attacked forex bureau officials and stole UGX 45,184,600.
Police said the incident occurred after officials from Riverside Forex Bureau left Bunga Trading Centre carrying USD 13,000, which they intended to exchange into Uganda shillings at a forex bureau along Kampala Road.
“After completing the transaction, the victims were intercepted in Nsambya by a gang of assailants riding six motorcycles, who attacked them and robbed them of the money,” Owoyesigyire said.
The first breakthrough in the investigation came on June 12, when police arrested Kamoga Yudah, also known as “Sparta,” and Kayabula Arnold, a boda boda rider suspected of participating in the robbery.
During the operation, investigators recovered a motorcycle bearing registration number UMA 602KK, which is believed to have been used in the commission of the crime.
Further investigations have since led to the arrest of three more suspects identified as Atusasiirwe Farouk, alias “Gaza,” a resident of Nansana; Ssemakula Ibra, alias “Bugalo Mwenda,” a resident of Bulenga; and Matovu Alex, a resident of Kazo in Kawempe Division.
“The arrested suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police have also launched a manhunt for additional suspects believed to have participated in the robbery and who remain at large.
“Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest other suspects who are still on the run,” he added.
The Nsambya robbery attracted public attention due to the level of coordination allegedly exhibited by the attackers, who used multiple motorcycles to intercept and overpower their targets before fleeing with the cash.
Kampala Metropolitan Police have reassured members of the public that investigations remain active and that all individuals linked to the robbery will be pursued.
“We remain committed to ensuring that all those involved in this robbery are arrested and brought to justice,” Owoyesigyire said.
The case remains under investigation.
