About 22 people have been rescued and evacuated for medical attention after a building under construction at Holy City Church in Bwerenga, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, collapsed, Uganda Police Force has said.
The incident occurred at Holy City Church, Brother Ronnie’s Ministries, in Kawuku-Bwerenga, where an extension of the main church building had reached the fourth floor.
In a statement published on X, police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said rescue operations were ongoing as emergency teams worked to establish whether anyone remained trapped beneath the rubble.
“Rescue operations are ongoing, with approximately 22 people rescued so far and being evacuated to Entebbe Grade B hospital facilities for medical attention,” Kawala said.
Police said the injured had been taken to Entebbe Grade B Hospital and other medical facilities for treatment.
Police, military personnel and other rescue teams were involved in the emergency response as efforts continued to search the collapsed structure.
The cause of the collapse had not been established by the time of publication, with police confirming that investigations were underway.
The incident has renewed concerns about construction safety and the structural integrity of buildings under development, particularly where work involves multi-storey extensions.
Authorities have yet to establish what caused the church extension to collapse or whether any construction-related violations contributed to the incident.
There was no official confirmation of fatalities in the police update, while the number of people who may have remained trapped was still being established.
The rescue operation was continuing as emergency teams worked to account for everyone who had been at the site when the structure collapsed.
