Kampala, April 8, 2026 — A joint security operation by the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces has led to the arrest of 18 suspects linked to a wave of phone snatching and robberies in Kampala.
According to police, the operation was carried out around the Clock Tower area following public outcry and viral social media videos showing criminals targeting unsuspecting motorists.
Authorities said the suspects had established a base along the Nakivubo Channel in Katwe, specifically in Katenda Zone, where they coordinated their activities.
“The operations were aimed at curbing phone snatching, robberies, and other criminal activities within the area,” police said in a statement, adding that the hideout structures have since been demolished by the Kampala Capital City Authority.
Security agencies recovered several exhibits during the operation, including knives, a hammer, and suspected narcotics.
In a related development, police conducted similar operations on April 6 in West Zone, Base Zone, and Kibuye I Parish in Makindye Division, leading to the arrest of more than 100 additional suspects.
“All suspects are currently in police custody pending court proceedings,” police said.
The crackdown comes amid growing concern over street crime in Kampala, particularly incidents of phone snatching targeting motorists in traffic hotspots. Authorities say operations will continue in affected areas to restore public safety.
