3 remanded over illegal takeover of deceased’s estate in Wakiso

KAMPALA — Three people have been remanded by the Makindye Magistrates Court over allegations of illegally taking over and disposing of land belonging to the estate of a deceased person in Wakiso District.

The accused are Male Umar, Nsereko Hood Mukasa Ssembatya, and Namboze Janat Nsubuga, who face multiple charges including intermeddling with a deceased person’s estate, forcible entry, malicious damage to property, theft, destruction of crops, eviction of lawful occupants, and trespassing on burial grounds.

According to a statement from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the suspects were arraigned in court in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate Uganda and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Uganda.

The accused were remanded until April 29, 2026.

It is alleged that between 2024 and 2025, the group—together with others still at large—illegally entered land measuring approximately four acres located at Ndejje-Lubugumu in Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, belonging to the estate of the late Ibrahim Katerega.

Investigators say the suspects forcibly evicted lawful occupants without a court order, destroyed plantations, and demolished houses with property still inside. They are also accused of deploying armed individuals carrying machetes and sticks during the alleged takeover.

Authorities further allege that the group fenced off the land, including burial grounds, effectively denying beneficiaries access to the estate.

“Investigations further indicate that, without letters of administration, the suspects participated in the sale of three acres of the deceased’s estate,” the Anti-Corruption Unit stated.

Officials say the case highlights growing concerns over illegal land grabbing and interference with deceased persons’ estates, particularly in peri-urban areas where land values have risen sharply.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities pursue additional suspects linked to the alleged scheme.
