Ugandan basketball player Martina Alexis Anyango has left Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Canons to continue her student-athlete career in the United States with the Texas Tech Lady Raiders.
Anyango, who played as a forward for the UCU Lady Canons, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2026 Women’s National Basketball League (NBL) Playoffs after helping UCU win the championship.
UCU announced the move while paying tribute to Anyango, who was developed through the university’s basketball programme.
“Martina was named the Women’s National Basketball League (NBL) Playoffs Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2026 season, won by the UCU Lady Canons,” the university said.
The university said Anyango’s move to the United States marks the next stage of her student-athlete journey and brings her time with the Lady Canons to an end.
She will join the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, the women’s basketball team representing Texas Tech University in the United States.
Anyango’s departure follows a successful 2026 season in which she played a key role in UCU’s NBL playoff campaign and was recognised as the postseason’s outstanding player.
UCU said her progression from its basketball programme to a university team in the United States reflects the role of its sports programme in developing student-athletes.
The university described itself as a sports powerhouse committed to academic and extracurricular excellence.
Anyango’s move also adds to a growing pathway for Ugandan basketball players to pursue opportunities in American college basketball, where student-athletes combine university education with competitive sport.
The Texas Tech Lady Raiders compete in the NCAA’s Division I system and are based in Lubbock, Texas.
