Thousands of Ugandans on Sunday converged at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala to participate in the 52nd birthday run of Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in a vibrant show of support for the annual charity event.
Held under the theme “Run for Charity, Run for Hope,” the run attracted a wide cross-section of participants, including government officials, security personnel, youth groups and members of the public. The event was organised by the Patriotic League of Uganda as part of activities marking Kainerugaba’s birthday on April 24.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa led the run as chief runner and delivered a speech on behalf of Kainerugaba, who praised the initiative for evolving from a private celebration into what he described as a national movement promoting unity, patriotism and service.

In the speech, Kainerugaba said the event aims to support vulnerable groups, particularly children lacking basic needs such as food, education and shelter. He thanked Ugandans for turning up in large numbers, saying their participation sends a strong message of solidarity to those in need.
He also expressed gratitude to his parents, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Janet Museveni, as well as family members and supporters for their continued encouragement.
The event drew several dignitaries, including Members of Parliament, senior security officials and civic leaders, with organisers highlighting the growing scale of the run as evidence of its expanding national appeal.

However, the event was not without criticism. Kampala Capital City Authority councillor Doreen Nyanjura questioned the involvement of security agencies, particularly police, raising concerns on social media about what she described as partisan participation in the event.
Ahead of the run, authorities issued traffic advisories around Kololo to manage the large crowds and ensure smooth movement in the city.
The annual birthday run has increasingly become one of the most visible public events in Kampala, blending fitness, charity and civic mobilisation, with proceeds directed towards supporting disadvantaged communities across Uganda.
