Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the long-serving Member of Parliament for Kira Municipality, has lost his parliamentary seat in the 2026 general elections, marking one of the most significant upsets of the cycle.

Nganda, a prominent opposition figure and Member of Parliament for over two decades, was defeated in a race that surprised many political observers.

The exact identity of the winning candidate has been confirmed through the electoral commission results as George Musisi, who successfully unseated Nganda to represent voters in Kira Municipality.

George Musisi, a prominent lawyer running on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, defeated Ssemujju by a margin of 6,876 votes. Musisi’s victory reflects shifting political dynamics in a constituency long regarded as an opposition stronghold.

Following the declaration, Musisi expressed both relief and determination. “It was a bit unkind that it took over nine hours for the Electoral Commission to declare our win,” Musisi said, acknowledging the lengthy wait for official confirmation.

His comment reflected broader frustrations among candidates and voters over delays in result announcements across the country.

Ssemujju, a veteran opposition figure who had held the seat for 15 years, contested the 2026 election under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) after leaving the FDC.

His defeat was part of a larger wave in which several seasoned opposition legislators, including Mathias Mpuuga, Medard Ssegona, and Asuman Basalirwa, also lost their seats.

The election cycle has seen several high-profile incumbents defeated, underscoring a wider appetite for change among segments of the electorate.

National attention now turns to how newly elected representatives will engage with pressing national issues and constituency development priorities in the coming parliamentary term.
