Kampala — Police have arrested a bodyguard attached to the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, over a shooting incident in which a female driver was injured near her residence in Kampala.

The suspect, identified as Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, is alleged to have shot at a woman driving a Toyota Harrier along MacKinnon Road in Nakasero on April 30, 2026, after what reports describe as a road confrontation involving a convoy linked to the Speaker’s security detail.

Kampala Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing, adding that the firearm used in the incident has been recovered.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner of Police Racheal Kawala said the matter is being treated as a serious criminal investigation, while urging the public to remain calm as facts are established.

“The suspect is in custody as investigations continue,” Kawala was quoted as saying in earlier briefings.

Conflicting Accounts of the Incident

Preliminary reports suggest the shooting followed a disagreement between the driver and security personnel over movement along a restricted or high-security route near the Speaker’s residence.

Some accounts indicate the driver may have failed to give way to a convoy, prompting the guard to open fire, while other versions suggest confusion over routing in the secured area.

The victim, whose identity has not been officially released, was reportedly taken for medical attention immediately after the incident.

Speaker’s Office Responds

Aide to Speaker Anita Among, Joseph Sabiti, clarified that the Speaker was not present at the scene at the time of the shooting, saying she was in Bukedea district for official engagements.

Sabiti added that upon being briefed, the Speaker reached out to the victim’s family to offer support and called for a thorough and expedited investigation.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Probe

The incident has triggered public concern and debate on social media about the use of force by security personnel attached to high-profile officials, with calls for greater accountability in convoy-related operations.

Police have not yet confirmed whether charges have been formally preferred, but say internal and criminal investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances of the shooting.

Authorities have also indicated that further statements will be released as inquiries progress.
