Security at Mengo Palace reportedly restricted access to performers wearing red during the annual Enkuuka end-of-year festival, a colour widely associated with the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

Musician Roden Y Kabako was barred from performing, while singer Pius Mayanja, popularly known as Pallaso, was only allowed entry after negotiations—on the condition that he came alone, leaving his entourage behind, according to Monitor reporter Gabriel Buule, who attended the event.

The festival, organised by the Buganda kingdom-based CBS FM station, saw Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda Luswata arrive at Lubiri, Mengo, to usher in the New Year 2026.

They were welcomed by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga. Prince Richard Ssemakookiro and Princess Catherine Ssaangalyambogo were also present.

Thousands of Buganda subjects gathered at Lubiri to enjoy entertainment and join the Kabaka in ushering in the New Year. Revellers sang the Buganda anthem upon the arrival of the Kabaka, marking a traditional start to the celebrations.

The Enkuuka festival remains one of the kingdom’s key cultural events, blending music, dance, and royal traditions as Buganda communities celebrate the transition into the New Year.
