Ugandan musician Ray G drew a large crowd to Kololo Airstrip in Kampala on Friday night, as fans turned up in significant numbers for a concert celebrating the Ankole-rooted artist.
The concert, promoted by Abtex Promotions with support from Uganda Waragi, featured different admission categories, with general entry tickets starting at Shs20,000 alongside VIP and table packages.
Fans travelled from different parts of western Uganda, with reports of organised groups and buses arriving from Mbarara to attend the show. By evening, the venue had filled with concertgoers, creating a vibrant atmosphere around the stage.
Online posts showed dense crowds at the venue, with supporters describing the turnout as a significant moment for Ray G and a demonstration of the growing appeal of music from western Uganda on Kampala’s entertainment scene.
One post by commentator Gabriel Buule compared Ray G’s reception in Kampala to a symbolic “colonisation” of Kololo, writing: “Historical kingdom of Ankole/Nkore never invaded Buganda but Ray G has been able to colonize Kololo.”
Ray G himself posted an evening update from the venue as preparations and performances got underway.
The turnout also generated debate online, with some users questioning whether the hype surrounding the concert matched the scale of the event, while supporters celebrated the crowd as a milestone for the singer.
The concert is part of Ray G’s continued rise from the western Uganda music scene, where he has built a strong following through songs rooted in the culture, language and musical identity of the region.
The large Kampala turnout suggests that his audience is extending beyond his traditional western Uganda base, giving the Ankole-born artist a stronger presence in Uganda’s mainstream entertainment industry.
