KAMPALA – Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested a 36-year-old man on charges of unlawful possession of suspected government stores following an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.
The suspect, identified as Prosper Turinawe, a driver attached to a private security company and a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21, 2026, after police received information that he had allegedly been seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, officers from Wandegeya Police Station swiftly launched an operation to trace the suspect.
Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said investigators established that Turinawe had been staying at a lodge in the area.
“Acting on intelligence information, officers mounted an operation and established that the suspect had been residing at a lodge along Mawanda Road. Although he initially evaded arrest, further information enabled our officers to intercept him at about 6:00 a.m. while in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition,” Owoyesigyire said.
Following the arrest, police conducted a search at the suspect’s residence in Kyebando Central, leading to the recovery of several items believed to be connected to the case.
“A search at his residence resulted in the recovery of approximately 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from various organisations. These items have been recovered and exhibited as evidence,” Owoyesigyire said.
The suspect is currently being held in police custody and has been charged with possession of government stores.
Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the premises occupied by the suspect may have been used to store the recovered items.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the recovered exhibits and to trace the firearm that remains unaccounted for. The suspect will be produced before court upon completion of the inquiries,” Owoyesigyire added.
Kampala Metropolitan Police has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious individuals and activities.
“We encourage the public to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station as we continue to strengthen efforts aimed at maintaining public safety and security,” Owoyesigyire said.
The case remains under active investigation.
