King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has made his first major administrative appointments in Tooro Kingdom, retaining key officials from the previous administration while appointing an 11-member advisory committee to guide his transition.
Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire has been reappointed Acting Omuhikirwa (Prime Minister) for six months, while Charles Kayondo Kamurasi has been retained as Omusuuga, the head of the Babiito royal clan.
Kato Rwakatale has also been retained as Assistant Musuuga.
The appointments were announced on Monday at Karuziika Palace by the King’s Principal Private Secretary and spokesperson, Paul Nyakaana Businge.
Rwomiire will oversee the day-to-day administration of the Kingdom during the six-month transition as the new King establishes his administration.
He was appointed Prime Minister in February 2025 by the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV and remained in charge of the Kingdom’s administrative response following Oyo’s death in August.
Kamurasi, who has served as Omusuuga since the restoration of traditional institutions in 1993, has also been retained. He played a central role in the succession process that led to Nyabongo’s selection as the new Omukama.
The King has also appointed an 11-member interim Advisory Committee to provide counsel during the transition.
The committee includes Muzei Erisa Kakyomya, Bernard Tungakwo, Chris Kaijuka, Binta Rosalia Achaali Kasojo, William Byaruhanga, Peace Mutuuzo, Monsignor Isaiah Mayombo, Abdullah Mangalji, Flavia Kabahenda Rwabuhoro, Aston Kajara and Monica Rubombora.
The appointments bring together figures with backgrounds in government, law, politics, business, agriculture and cultural affairs.
Former Attorney General William Byaruhanga, former State Minister for Gender and Culture Peace Mutuuzo, former State Minister for Finance Aston Kajara and former Kyegegwa Woman MP Flavia Rwabuhoro are among the members of the advisory team.
The six-month arrangement gives Nyabongo I time to organise his administration following his coronation on September 29, after succeeding the late King Oyo.
The new King was selected by the Tooro Royal Succession Committee in September following Oyo’s death on August 27, 2026.
