KAMPALA — The Makerere University 92nd Electoral Commission has officially declared Kadondi Gracious, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, as the Guild President-elect following a closely contested election held on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

In a formal declaration signed by Electoral Commission Chairperson Owomugisha Maureen, Kadondi was confirmed winner after securing 6,801 votes, the highest in the race.

“By the powers invested in me by the Makerere University Students Guild Constitution 2022, I hereby declare Kadondi Gracious as the 92nd Guild President-Elect,” the statement read in part.

Kadondi defeated her closest rival, former Miss Uganda contestant Hannah Karema, who polled 5,787 votes in an online and physical voting process.

Victory under a politically charged campaign

Kadondi’s victory comes after a highly competitive campaign season marked by strong mobilisation and occasional tensions between rival camps.

Earlier in the week, her campaign team raised concerns over the cancellation of a planned “Street Jam” rally that was expected to feature artists including King Saha and Nina Roz. Despite the disruption, Kadondi maintained a consistent lead throughout the election period.

Electoral Commission praises peaceful process

The Electoral Commission commended students for participating in a peaceful and orderly electoral process conducted under the Makerere University Students Guild Statute 2022.

Officials said the election was carried out in accordance with established university electoral guidelines, with results verified and transmitted to top university leadership.

The official outcome has been shared with the University Council, the Vice Chancellor, and the Dean of Students. Kadondi is expected to be sworn in later this month as the 92nd Guild President.

Congratulations from leadership and alumni voices

Following the announcement, congratulatory messages poured in from student leaders and alumni networks.

Among those who publicly congratulated the incoming Guild President was Lina Zedriga Waru, who urged her to lead with resilience.

“Congratulations Kadondi Gracious upon your victory in the Makerere University Guild President Elections. Serve with humility, patience and thick skin for leadership comes with its own challenges,” she posted.

The Dean of Students at Makerere also acknowledged the outcome, saying:

“Gallant Makereans, please receive official results declared by the EC Chairperson @owomugishaMomo! We congratulate H.E Gracious Kadondi upon her win.”

A closely watched student election

Kadondi’s win marks one of the most competitive Makerere Guild races in recent years, reflecting heightened political engagement among students.

Her victory under the National Unity Platform (NUP) banner also underscores the continued influence of national political alignments within Uganda’s premier university politics.

She now prepares to take over leadership of the 92nd Guild, succeeding the outgoing administration after her swearing-in later this month.
