NUP rejects 2026 presidential election results

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has rejected the presidential election results announced by Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama on January 17, 2026, arguing that the figures lack legal credibility and cannot be verified.

In a statement issued by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, the party said the results announced by the Electoral Commission are “baseless” due to the alleged absence of official declaration forms, which are critical documents used to authenticate vote tallies from polling stations.

Rubongoya said declaration forms are central to ensuring transparency and accountability during elections, noting that without them, it is impossible to independently confirm the accuracy of the results released by the EC.

The opposition party said it will not recognise the outcome declared by Justice Byabakama and accused the Electoral Commission of failing to follow established electoral procedures.

NUP further called for accountability and urged relevant authorities to address what it described as serious irregularities in the vote tallying process.

Justice Byabakama announced the presidential results earlier in January, declaring a winner following the national vote. However, opposition parties and some civil society actors have continued to question the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

By press time, the Electoral Commission had not issued a public response to NUP’s claims regarding the alleged missing declaration forms.

Political analysts warn that the dispute could heighten political and legal tensions in the post-election period, with possible petitions or further action expected from aggrieved parties.

The developments have continued to attract attention from both local observers and international stakeholders monitoring Uganda’s electoral landscape.
