Sembabule — Tension is running high in Sembabule Town Council, Sembabule District, following reports that Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers allegedly shot at the vehicle of National Unity Platform (NUP) LCIII candidate William Kangave, injuring two people in the early hours of Wednesday.

The incident comes as LCIII elections take place across the country.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Kangave claimed that two of his supporters, Sekiwa Rogers and Male Meddie, were shot at around 3am as they attempted to stop his rival candidate from allegedly distributing money to voters.

Kangave said that as the supporters tried to intervene, vehicles carrying armed soldiers arrived at the scene and allegedly opened fire on his car — a black Toyota Noah — injuring the two.

Mawogola County Member of Parliament, Ms Gorreth Namugga, said four injured NUP supporters have so far been taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment following the incident.

“The violence in Sembabule Town Council has started in high gear where the vehicle belonging to the NUP candidate Kangave William has been shot at and vandalised by men in army uniform,” Namugga posted on her X account on Wednesday.

Four candidates are contesting for the Sembabule LCIII seat: Monica Ndibarekera (NRM), William Kangave (NUP), Bishop Jackson Mulungi (Independent), and Ronald Nsubuga (Independent).
