KAMPALA – Uganda is in mourning following the sudden death of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament, Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away on April 19, 2026, after undergoing surgery at Alexandra Medical Centre.
Nakimuli, a member of the National Unity Platform, reportedly died due to complications arising from what has been described as a routine uterine fibroid procedure. Her death has shocked colleagues, constituents, and the wider political community.
Postmortem Inconclusive
A postmortem conducted at Mulago National Referral Hospital did not establish the exact cause of death, prompting further investigations, including toxicology analysis and a comprehensive surgical review.
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi said a full report is expected soon to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Medical Centre Speaks Out
In a statement released on April 21, the medical facility where Nakimuli underwent surgery expressed “deep grief” over her passing, describing her as “not just a patient, but a leader, daughter, and devoted servant to her people.”
The centre’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Castro Kisuule, emphasised that the loss of any patient is “never routine” and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to ethical and compassionate care.
The facility said it remains in close contact with Nakimuli’s family and called for calm, patience, and prayers as investigations continue.
Tributes and Funeral Arrangements
Nakimuli is being remembered as a vocal advocate against corruption and environmental degradation, particularly the destruction of forests. Fellow legislators described her as a bridge-builder who worked across political divides.
Her body is lying in state at Parliament, where colleagues and members of the public are paying their last respects.
According to David Lewis Rubongoya, a vigil is scheduled at the party’s headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, ahead of her burial in Luweero District.
Family Grief
Nakimuli’s death has also drawn emotional reactions from her family. Her father, Fr. Christopher Walusimbi, urged faith and hope despite the tragedy, noting that he has now lost five of his 11 children.
She is survived by her daughter and other relatives.
Nation Awaits Answers
As the country grieves, attention now turns to the pending medical reports expected to shed light on the exact cause of death. Authorities have urged patience, assuring the public that a thorough and transparent process is underway.
Nakimuli’s passing leaves a significant gap in Uganda’s opposition politics and in the representation of Kalangala District.
