KAMPALA — Former Butambala County Member of Parliament Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has resurfaced at Nateete Police Station after his whereabouts remained unclear following his arrest, according to reports from local media.
Kivumbi, who is also a senior figure in the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), is currently in police custody and is expected to appear before court, according to information attributed to police authorities.
The latest development comes weeks after Kivumbi was granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court after spending nearly seven months on remand. He was later re-arrested in Mpigi shortly after his release, with his lawyers at the time saying they had lost contact with him after security personnel picked him up.
Kivumbi was initially arrested in January 2026 following violent incidents linked to the general elections. Prosecutors accused him and other suspects of offences connected to attacks on security installations and alleged acts intended to intimidate the government for political purposes.
The charges arose from events in Butambala, where authorities alleged that violence occurred around Kibibi Police Station and the Electoral Commission tally centre. Kivumbi and his supporters have disputed the allegations.
His lawyers previously challenged his continued detention, arguing that he was entitled to bail pending trial. The High Court granted him bail after considering factors including his fixed place of residence and the suitability of his sureties.
Kivumbi served as Butambala County MP and was a prominent opposition voice during the 11th Parliament. He also served as NUP deputy president for the Buganda region.
Police have not yet issued a detailed explanation regarding the circumstances of his latest arrest or the specific allegations leading to his detention at Nateete Police Station.
The development is likely to attract renewed attention from opposition supporters and human rights groups, who have previously raised concerns about arrests and detention of opposition politicians during politically sensitive periods.
