Muntu: Gen Museveni should retire peacefully

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu has urged voters in Rubindi-Ruhumba Town Council, Mbarara District, to vote out President Yoweri Museveni, arguing that after decades in power, the president no longer has the capacity to confront corruption.

Speaking during a campaign rally as the country enters the final days ahead of the January 15, 2026, general elections, Muntu said corruption has become deeply entrenched under prolonged leadership, slowing Uganda’s development.

“After 40 years in leadership, it is clear that President Museveni no longer has the capacity to fight corruption. Corruption is the biggest obstacle to our development, and it cannot be solved by the same leadership that allowed it to grow,” Muntu told supporters.

The ANT leader said Uganda needs a peaceful and orderly transition of power, insisting that change can be achieved through the ballot without violence or instability.

“What we are calling for is a peaceful retirement of Gen. Museveni through the vote. Uganda does not need chaos. We need a calm, constitutional transition that allows new leadership to rebuild institutions and restore integrity,” Muntu said.

He urged voters to choose what he described as principled and disciplined leadership, capable of restoring accountability and justice in public service.

“Strong nations are built on strong institutions, not strongmen. If we want to end corruption and deliver services to our people, then leadership must change,” he added.

Muntu’s message forms part of his broader campaign theme centered on justice-based peace, institutional reform, and national unity. The former army commander and long-time opposition figure has consistently emphasized non-violent change, saying peaceful transition is the only way to prevent future instability and political victimization.

As campaigns intensify across the country, opposition candidates are increasingly focusing on corruption, governance, and democratic transition, with voters set to decide Uganda’s leadership in just days.
