Uganda’s athletics team has registered a strong start at the African Youth Games in Angola, with rising stars Keren Chelimo and Baskaline Cherotwo winning bronze and silver medals respectively.

Keren Chelimo claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000 metres after a determined performance against a highly competitive field. Her podium finish adds to Uganda’s medal tally at the continental youth championship and underlines the country’s reputation as a force in endurance events.

In the women’s 1,500 metres Under-17 final, Baskaline Cherotwo delivered an impressive run to secure silver for Uganda. Cherotwo crossed the line in 4:28.46, finishing second behind Ethiopia’s Hana Negesa Bikila, who took gold in 4:26.14.

The closely contested race drew applause from spectators and officials, with Cherotwo praised for her composure and finishing strength.

Officials from Ugandan Athletics Track and Field congratulated the two athletes, noting that their success reflects ongoing investment in youth development and talent identification across the country.

The medals come as Uganda also prepares for another major global outing, with a strong squad named for the 2026 World Cross Country Championships scheduled to take place in Tallahassee, Florida, on January 10, 2026.

The Senior Men’s team will feature world-class athletes including Jacob Kiplimo, Dan Kibet, Kenneth Kiprop, Deogracius Musobo, Dolphine Chelimo and Emmanuel Kibet. In the Under-20 men’s category, Abraham Cherotich, Jeremiah Kwemoi, Solomon Andiema, Daniel Kiprotich Chelogoi and Dan Kipyeko have been selected.

Uganda’s Senior Women’s team to Florida includes Sarah Chelangat, Joy Cheptoyek, Rebecca Chelangat, Martha Chemutai, Kereen Chemusto and Rispa Cherop, while the Under-20 women’s squad will be led by Charity Cherop, Bentalin Yeko, Nancy Chepkwurui, Felister Chekwemoi and Peace Chebet.

The Mixed Relay team will comprise Daniel Comboni, Silas Chemutai, Brenda Chekwemoi and Sylvia Chelangat.
