Kin Kariisa, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Next Media Uganda, has officially joined the board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

Kariisa was formally introduced to the bank’s board on Tuesday, with his appointment taking effect in April 2026.

Announcing the development, Kariisa described the appointment as both an honour and an opportunity to contribute to one of Uganda’s oldest financial institutions.

“Today, I was formally introduced as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered Uganda, a bank that has been an integral part of Uganda’s economic history for over a century,” Kariisa posted on X.

“I am honoured to join the Board, confident that the institution’s greatest contribution to Uganda’s future is still ahead,” he added.

Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, which has operated in the country for more than 112 years, is one of Uganda’s leading commercial banks and has played a major role in financing trade, infrastructure and private sector growth.

Kariisa brings extensive experience in media, technology, digital transformation and business strategy to the board. He is widely recognised for building Next Media into one of Uganda’s largest multimedia companies through innovation and digital expansion.

According to the bank, Kariisa’s expertise in technology, cyber resilience, artificial intelligence and risk management is expected to strengthen the institution’s growth ambitions amid rapid digital transformation in the banking sector.

Standard Chartered Bank Uganda Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Rughani reportedly welcomed the appointment, saying Kariisa’s experience would support the bank’s long-term strategy and innovation agenda.

Kariisa also highlighted the role financial institutions are expected to play in Uganda’s economic future, particularly in financing large-scale oil, infrastructure and development projects.

His appointment comes at a time when banks across Africa are increasingly prioritising digital banking, fintech partnerships and cybersecurity as part of broader transformation efforts.

Kariisa joins the board as Standard Chartered Uganda continues positioning itself to support Uganda’s evolving economy and expanding investment landscape.
