Francistown, Botswana — Uganda’s homegrown electric mobility innovation continues to make headlines across the continent as the Kiira Motors Trans-Africa Electric Expedition advances steadily toward its final destination in Cape Town.
In its latest update on Wednesday, Kiira Motors announced that the team had reached Francistown, Botswana, marking Day 12 of the historic expedition. The electric coach has so far covered 4,062 kilometres, which represents 31.25% of the full journey.
According to the company, the expedition has now avoided 1,898.6 kilograms of CO₂ emissions and used 3,452 kWh of energy, averaging 0.85 kWh per kilometre—a performance metric Kiira Motors says demonstrates the efficiency of the Kayoola E-Coach on long-distance routes.
“Botswana continues to unfold with its signature blend of calm wilderness and vast horizons,” the company posted on X. “Safety remains paramount, and we are proud to report zero incidents so far.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Kiira Motors confirmed the successful completion of a 1,576-kilometre stretch across Zambia, a segment the automaker described as a critical test for the vehicle’s durability and power systems.
“The Made in Uganda Trans Africa Electric Expedition completed a 1,576-km journey across Zambia, showcasing the strength and reliability of Uganda’s Kayoola E-Coach,” the company said, thanking Zambia for the warm reception and strong support along the route.
The expedition also made a symbolic stop at Victoria Falls, one of Africa’s most iconic natural wonders.“ Our expedition just made a powerful stop at the mighty Victoria Falls,” Kiira Motors wrote. “As we honour these cultural touchstones, our 13-metre Kayoola E-Coach is covering these landmarks, proving that African engineering can go the distance.”
The From the Pearl to the Cape expedition is the first of its kind for an African-made electric coach. The journey aims to demonstrate the viability of electric mobility across long distances, inspire regional collaboration on green transport, and highlight Uganda’s growing capacity in automotive manufacturing.
The team will continue southward through Botswana and into South Africa as the coach inches closer to Cape Town, where the expedition is expected to culminate later this month.
