KALANGALA – Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Hellen Nakimuli has died following complications from a surgical procedure, in news that has sent shockwaves across Uganda’s political landscape.

Her passing was confirmed on Sunday, April 19, 2026, by the National Unity Platform (NUP) and party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, who described it as “terrible, shocking news” and a significant loss to the country.

According to initial reports, Nakimuli died after undergoing surgery at a medical facility, although details about the procedure and hospital have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Nakimuli, who was serving as Woman MP for Kalangala District in Uganda’s 11th Parliament, was widely known for her advocacy on issues affecting island communities, including transport, healthcare access, education, and infrastructure development.

Leaders and residents in Kalangala expressed grief as news of her death spread.

“This is a huge loss for Kalangala. She has been a strong voice for our district,” a local leader said.

A resident added, “She understood the challenges we face as island communities and always tried to represent us.”

Colleagues in Parliament also paid tribute, describing her as a committed and accessible leader who maintained close ties with her constituents despite the logistical challenges of representing a district made up of islands on Lake Victoria.

Born in 1985, Nakimuli was in her early 40s and among a younger generation of legislators advocating for inclusive development.

Her death comes at a time when Uganda continues to grapple with improving healthcare access, a reality that has also sparked renewed reflection among some observers.

As of now, official communication regarding funeral arrangements is yet to be released.

More details are expected as her family, Parliament, and party officials provide further updates.
