KAMPALA — Abba Marcus Mayanja, the eldest son of Ugandan musician Jose Chameleone, has reportedly been arrested in Minnesota, United States, on a misdemeanor domestic assault allegation.
Mayanja was reportedly arrested on August 14 in Edina, Minnesota, following a complaint involving his girlfriend. Reports circulating online indicate that he was booked on suspicion of domestic assault, with bail set at $10,000.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and Mayanja is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Mayanja, 20, is the eldest son of Chameleone, whose real name is Joseph Mayanja, and Daniella Atim. He has lived in the United States for several years and previously attended Spring Lake Park High School in Minnesota.
New Vision reported earlier this year that Mayanja and his fiancée, identified as Angel, were expecting their first child. At the time, the couple were living in the United States.
The reported arrest comes amid increased public attention on Mayanja’s personal life and his family’s history of highly publicised relationship disputes.
In 2024, Mayanja publicly criticised his father over what he described as alcohol-related problems and their impact on the family. His comments generated considerable debate in Uganda, with his uncle, musician Weasel Manizo, later responding to the dispute.
Mayanja has also previously made allegations of mistreatment within his family in social media posts. Those claims were reported by Ugandan media but were not established as facts by a court.
His reported arrest has therefore renewed discussion online about domestic conflict, family patterns and whether cycles of violence and confrontation can be passed between generations.
Mayanja first gained public attention in Uganda as a child of Chameleone, but has since pursued interests outside his father’s music career. He was a competitive swimmer and represented Uganda at junior competitions before relocating to the United States. He later developed an interest in music and began releasing his own material.
Ugandan media reports have also documented his involvement in several controversies in recent years, including public disputes involving his family and private matters.
The latest reports, however, concern a criminal allegation in Minnesota. Details of the circumstances surrounding the reported incident remain limited, and claims about what happened between Mayanja and his girlfriend should not be treated as established facts unless supported by police records or court proceedings.
Mayanja is reportedly due to appear in court on August 17.
