LIRA CITY, Uganda — Security personnel at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, working closely with the Uganda Police Force, have arrested a man accused of impersonating a medical officer and defrauding an unsuspecting patient’s caregiver.

The suspect, identified as Okello Moses, was arrested on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at around 10:00 a.m. from the hospital’s female surgical ward.

According to hospital management, Okello allegedly posed as a medical officer and solicited money from a caregiver, claiming he would expedite medical services and surgery for the patient. He reportedly demanded a total of Shs500,000 to facilitate what he described as a “quick medical procedure.”

The suspect is said to have insisted on receiving a deposit of Shs200,000 before any intervention could be made, with the balance to be paid later. After handing over the Shs200,000, the caregiver grew suspicious and reported the matter to the hospital security team.

Security personnel promptly alerted police officers, who arrested the suspect immediately after he received the money.

The case has been registered at Lira City Central Police Station under reference number 32/26/02/2026. Authorities have preferred charges of theft of cash and impersonation against the suspect.

Hospital management revealed that more than five individuals have been arrested in February 2026 alone under similar circumstances involving fraud and impersonation within the facility.

The hospital has reassured the public that its security team remains on 24-hour alert, supported by CCTV surveillance systems, to safeguard patients, visitors, and hospital property.

Management has urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity to hospital authorities to help maintain safety and integrity at the regional referral facility.
