Kampala, Uganda — The Electoral Commission of Uganda has postponed repeat elections for Sub-County, Town Council, and Municipal Division Local Government Councils in areas where voting was not conducted or concluded earlier this month.

In a public notice issued Thursday, the Commission announced that the polls, initially slated for February 26, 2026, will now take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

Reason for the Change

The Commission said the adjustment is intended to allow additional time for administrative and logistical preparations. The extension will also accommodate electoral areas where fresh nominations were required following the death of some candidates.

Officials emphasised that the decision falls within the Commission’s constitutional mandate to ensure that electoral processes are completed in all affected areas.

Positions to Be Filled

Voters in the impacted electoral areas will elect leaders for the following positions at Sub County, Town Council, and Municipal Division levels:

1.     Chairpersons

2.     Directly Elected Councillors

3.     Women Councillors

4.     Councillors representing Special Interest Groups — including Youths, Older Persons, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

Polling Arrangements

Polling will be conducted at designated stations within the affected electoral areas nationwide. Where applicable, voting will also take place at respective electoral college venues.

Voting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. Immediately after polls close, vote counting will be carried out at the polling stations, followed by declaration of results in line with the relevant electoral laws.

The Commission has called on voters, candidates, and other stakeholders to participate peacefully and adhere to electoral guidelines to ensure a smooth conclusion of the process.
