KAMPALA — A rare gathering of three of East Africa’s surviving founding First Ladies has drawn admiration across the region, with many describing it as a powerful symbol of the enduring bonds that have united Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania since independence.
The widely shared photograph brings together Mama Miria Obote of Uganda, Mama Ngina Kenyatta of Kenya and Mama Maria Nyerere of Tanzania—three women whose lives have been closely intertwined with the political history of East Africa for more than six decades.
Mama Miria Obote, 90, is the widow of Uganda’s former President Milton Obote. Mama Ngina Kenyatta, 93, is the widow of Kenya’s founding President Jomo Kenyatta, while Mama Maria Nyerere, 95, is the widow of Tanzania’s founding President Julius Nyerere. Together, they represent a living connection to the generation that witnessed the birth of independent East African states and helped shape the region’s early post-independence history.
The reunion comes at a time when the East African Community (EAC) continues to promote regional integration through expanded trade, infrastructure development and political cooperation among its member states.
Although no official statement accompanied the photograph, its circulation on social media has prompted widespread reflection on the legacy of East Africa’s founding generation and the personal friendships that have endured long after their husbands left office.
The three women have remained respected public figures in their respective countries, participating in national events, charitable activities and regional engagements.
Mama Maria Nyerere continues to make annual visits to Uganda for the Nyerere Beatification Prayer Day held ahead of the Uganda Martyrs celebrations. During her visit in 2024, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni praised her role in promoting the beatification cause of the late Julius Nyerere and welcomed her continued commitment to strengthening ties between Uganda and Tanzania.
The longstanding friendship among the three matriarchs has previously been highlighted as an example of how personal relationships have transcended political transitions and national borders in East Africa.
As most of East Africa’s founding leaders have passed on, the three former First Ladies remain among the few surviving public figures directly linked to the independence era. Their reunion has therefore been viewed by many as more than a family photograph, but as a reminder of the region’s shared history, common aspirations and enduring commitment to unity.
