Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and his political ally Hajji Obeid Lutale remain in Luzira Prison, marking 404 days in detention since their abduction in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024.

They face treason charges, alongside UPDF officer Captain Denis Oola, stemming from allegations of plotting against the government.

Their trial, which began in a military court, was later transferred to the civilian High Court following a Supreme Court ruling that civilian trials cannot be conducted in military courts. Besigye, 69, and Lutale, 66, have had multiple bail applications denied, with the prosecution citing concerns about their flight risk and the inability to provide surety.

On December 23, 2025, Justice Emmanuel Baguma of the High Court in Kampala was scheduled to deliver a ruling on the accused’s bail and a stay of proceedings pending a constitutional petition challenging the judge’s impartiality.

The ruling was postponed to December 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM, and production warrants have been issued for both Besigye and Lutale to appear in person.

The defence argues that both men’s advanced age, lack of prior convictions, and history of compliance support their release, while supporters decry the prolonged detention as politically motivated.

As a result of the postponement, Besigye and Lutale will spend another Christmas behind bars. This is their second festive season in Luzira Prison without the freedom to celebrate with family.

Presidential candidate Elton Joseph Mabirizi was also present in court during recent hearings, highlighting the high-profile nature of the case.

Supporters continue to call for justice, citing concerns over delayed trial proceedings and prolonged remand. The next court session, scheduled for December 29, is expected to provide clarity on the case’s future, with both accused required to be physically present for the ruling.
