Kampala — The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Airtel Money have come out to support the upcoming Virunga Gorilla Marathon, an event organisers say will blend sport, conservation, tourism promotion, and digital financial inclusion.

The marathon, scheduled for 30 May 2026 in the Virunga Mountains region, is expected to attract both local and international runners for two major categories—the 112km Ultra Marathon and the 42km Full Marathon.

The event is designed not only as a sporting challenge but also as a platform for ecological conservation, social sustainability, and community development in one of East Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

Push for cashless payments

A key feature of this year’s event is the integration of Airtel Money as the official and exclusive payment platform for all marathon kit purchases.

Airtel Uganda, through its mobile money service Airtel Money, announced that all transactions will be processed via Airtel Money Merchant Pay, in a move aimed at accelerating Uganda’s shift toward a cashless economy.

“Airtel Money is Uganda’s most affordable and secure financial service,” the company said in a statement. “We are embedding Airtel Money Merchant Pay into the marathon experience to advance the drive toward digital payments among Ugandans.”

Participants will be able to register and purchase kits by dialing 1859# or using the MyAirtel App.

“Powering progress through digital inclusion”

Speaking at the partnership launch, Airtel Money Managing Director Japhet Aritho said the collaboration reflects a broader vision of financial transformation.

“Today, we take another step in advancing our vision of a cashless economy, one that simplifies transactions and makes them more accessible through digital solutions,” Aritho said.

“At Airtel Money, we believe the future of financial transactions is digital, driven by simplicity, accessibility, and convenience. This partnership brings that vision to life on a trusted and impactful platform.”

He added that the marathon represents more than sport, highlighting its role in tourism and community upliftment.

“This marathon is something to be proud of. It is more than a race; it is a platform that brings people together, promotes tourism, and uplifts communities,” he said. “We remain committed to supporting initiatives that celebrate Uganda’s heritage and improve the well-being of communities.”

Conservation and tourism focus

Uganda Wildlife Authority has also endorsed the marathon, underscoring its importance in promoting conservation awareness and sustainable tourism in Uganda’s protected landscapes.

The event route will take runners through rainforests, rolling hills, and volcanic terrain, offering what organisers describe as an immersive experience in the Virunga ecosystem.

Organisers say the marathon will help spotlight conservation areas and strengthen Uganda’s position as a leading eco-tourism destination.

Organisers highlight impact

Virunga Gorilla Marathon team lead Kenneth Kamukama Rashid praised Airtel Money’s involvement, saying the digital payment system would improve efficiency and access.

“We thank Airtel Money for always being innovative and for creating solutions that enhance flexibility and convenience,” Kamukama said. “We believe this partnership will significantly boost kit sales due to its ease of use.”

He added that improved digital payments will also help organisers better track transactions and expand access to participants.

“Our runners will experience an unforgettable challenge as they pass through rainforests, rolling hills, and ancient lava fields, while engaging with the warmth of local communities,” he said.

Broader vision

Organisers and partners say the marathon represents a growing trend of linking sports events with conservation and digital innovation.

“As Airtel Money, we will continue to enable seamless payments, expand access, and drive financial inclusion across Uganda,” Aritho said. “Together, we are not just powering payments—we are powering progress, inclusion, and a more connected Uganda.”
