A 14-year-old pupil from Kabale District has captured national attention after a video showing her cycling to school in heavy rain sparked an outpouring of support, culminating in a full education sponsorship.
Angel Blessings Atuhaire, a Primary Seven candidate at Kengoma Day Primary School, went viral after footage emerged of her navigating wet roads alongside trucks on her way to school. The clip highlighted both her determination and the challenges faced by many learners in rural Uganda.
The story gained further traction after journalist Gideon Nova Kwikiriza tracked down Angel and her family. He revealed that despite consistently ranking among the top three in her class, Angel has had to cycle herself to school due to her father’s demanding work schedule.
Her father, Moses Nfitumukiza, a boda boda rider, expressed concern over her daily commute but said he had limited options as he leaves home early each morning in search of income.
Touched by the story, media personality Sheilah Gashumba publicly pledged to fully support Angel’s education. In a statement shared online, she committed to covering her school fees, boarding costs, and other scholastic needs through to university.
Following consultations between the family and Kwikiriza, plans are now underway to transfer Angel to a boarding primary school within her locality. The move is expected to provide a safer and more stable learning environment as she prepares for her Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
While many observers noted that Angel’s resilience reflects the reality of countless children in rural communities, her story has reignited conversations around access to safe schooling and the role of community support in bridging educational gaps.
For Angel and her family, the unexpected support marks a turning point—transforming a story of hardship into one of opportunity and hope.
