KAMPALA — The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has confirmed that 1,238 recruit warders and wardresses will officially pass out this Friday, April 17, 2026, in a ceremony aimed at strengthening the country’s correctional system.

According to a press statement issued by the Senior Commissioner of Prisons and spokesperson, Frank Baine Mayanja, the event will take place at the Maroons Grounds within the Luzira Prisons Complex, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

The Vice President, Jessica Rose Epel Alupo, is expected to preside over the ceremony as Chief Guest, marking the culmination of months of intensive training for the new recruits.

Prisons authorities said attendance will be strictly by invitation, with tight security and protocol arrangements anticipated at the Luzira venue.

The graduation comes at a time when Uganda’s justice system is facing heightened public attention. Earlier this week, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) petitioned the Chief Justice over concerns surrounding a mobile court session held at Ggaba Community Church grounds, sparking debate within the legal fraternity.

Amid these developments, the UPS says the addition of over 1,200 personnel is part of broader efforts to boost institutional capacity and improve management across prison facilities nationwide.

The newly passed-out warders and wardresses are expected to be deployed immediately to various stations across the country following their commissioning.
