RUKUNGIRI, UGANDA — A legal challenge has been filed against the election of Security Minister Jim Muhwezi as Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, setting the stage for a closely watched court battle.
The petition was lodged at the High Court in Rukungiri by rival candidate Fred Turyamuhweza, who contested under the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and narrowly lost in the January 2026 polls.
In his filing, Turyamuhweza alleges that the election was marred by irregularities and violations of electoral laws, which he argues significantly affected the outcome. The petition also accuses the Electoral Commission of procedural lapses in the management of the vote.
The petitioner is seeking several remedies from the court, including the nullification of the election results, the removal of Muhwezi from Parliament, and an order for a fresh election in Rujumbura County.
Court officials confirmed that the case has been received and is awaiting hearing, with both parties expected to present evidence and call witnesses. Muhwezi has since filed a response, indicating his intention to contest the allegations and defend his victory.
The petition adds to a wave of post-election cases following Uganda’s 2026 general elections, reflecting ongoing concerns over electoral transparency and accountability.
A ruling in favor of Turyamuhweza could trigger a by-election in the constituency, while a dismissal of the petition would affirm Muhwezi’s seat and reinforce his standing within government.
The outcome is expected to attract national attention, given Muhwezi’s senior role and long tenure in Uganda’s political landscape.
