Muhoozi marks two years as military chief

Kampala — General Muhoozi Kainerugaba marked two years as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) with a social media post invoking divine guidance for the military.

On March 22, 2026, the anniversary of his appointment by President Yoweri Museveni in 2024, Muhoozi wrote on X:

“I have always felt and known that there is only one eternal Commander-in-Chief of UPDF…Jesus Christ our God. May His name be praised forever and may UPDF always destroy its enemies.”

The post quickly drew hundreds of likes and supportive replies, with users praising recent anti-corruption measures, improved soldier welfare, and modernization of the armed forces.

Supporters Highlight Achievements

Members of the Patriotic League of Uganda lauded Muhoozi’s leadership, pointing to tangible improvements in the UPDF: enhanced pay and housing for soldiers, better equipment and logistics and recognition through awards for operations in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“These past two years under General Muhoozi have seen unprecedented focus on soldier welfare and operational efficiency,” said one supporter on X.

Critics Raise Concerns About Nepotism

Despite online support, some critics continue to express concern over nepotism, noting that Muhoozi is the son of President Museveni. They warn that his prominence in the military could signal political ambitions.

Analysts note that while critics remain vocal, the overwhelmingly positive online response hints at growing public affirmation, and some observers interpret it as early signals of Muhoozi’s potential 2026 presidential aspirations.

A Faith-Driven Message

Muhoozi’s post frames his leadership in a spiritual context, portraying the UPDF as guided by divine authority. Analysts say the faith-based tone resonates strongly with a segment of the population while reinforcing loyalty within the military ranks.

The anniversary post underscores Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s continued visibility and influence in Uganda’s military and political landscape, with both supporters and detractors watching closely as his tenure progresses.
