MTN on the spot over vanishing data bundles

Kampala, Uganda — A retired top police official has raised eyebrows online after his MTN Uganda data bundle reportedly disappeared in under an hour.

AIGP (Rtd) Asan Kasingye, a former Assistant Inspector General of Police, shared screenshots on X showing that his 10,000 UGX Gaga weekdays bundle—intended to last until Thursday—was exhausted in just 40 minutes. “This morning at 10:14, I bought a Gaga weekdays bundle of 10k. At 10:53, I have been informed by you about the usage to 50%, 80% & now exhausted all just in one hour,” Kasingye wrote. “Can I have an explanation why this is so?”

The post quickly went viral, garnering over 1,000 likes and 600 replies, with many users reporting similar issues. Some complained that bundles disappeared after light streaming of movies, while others noted half of their daily allocation gone by mid-morning. One user, Maama Uganda, noted: “My bundles vanish even with minimal usage—something is clearly wrong.”

MTN Uganda responded on social media, apologizing for the inconvenience and advising users to check the MyMTN app for app-specific usage breakdowns. The telco also wished Kasingye a happy birthday and humorously suggested that background apps, automatic updates, or heavy streaming could explain the rapid depletion.

This incident has sparked a broader discussion on mobile data transparency in Uganda, with many customers calling for clearer usage tracking and alerts to prevent unexpected depletion.
