Mityana — The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has directed a developer to remove an illegally established fuel station at Kakindu Roundabout in Kakindu Town Council, Mityana District.
According to the environmental regulator, enforcement action was taken after inspections confirmed that the fuel pump facility had been constructed and was operating without a valid Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) certificate.
NEMA said the development contravenes provisions of the National Environment Act and related environmental regulations that require developers to obtain approval before undertaking projects likely to affect the environment.
The authority noted that it had earlier issued directives ordering the developer to halt operations and remove the facility, but the instructions were not complied with.
Further investigations revealed that underground fuel storage tanks had been installed dangerously close to nearby commercial buildings and next to a busy roundabout, raising concerns over possible fuel contamination, fire hazards and threats to public safety.
NEMA warned that such developments pose significant environmental and safety risks if proper planning and regulatory procedures are not followed.
The authority reiterated that all developers intending to establish fuel stations or petroleum storage facilities must first obtain environmental approvals, including conducting an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.
“Environmental assessments are essential to safeguard communities, ensure proper planning and protect the environment,” NEMA said in a statement.
