The last surviving General of the 12 Mau Mau generals who led the armed struggle against British colonial rule in neighbouring Kenya, Kiambati wa Njora, has died at the age of 106 years.

According to his son, Maina Kiambati, his father died of old age on Tuesday at his home in Ngorika, Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County, Kenya.

The passing of the Kiambati means all the 12 top senior Mau Mau veterans of “General rank” in Nyandarua have all passed away.

According to local media reports, the late Kiambati wa Njora spent the weekend with his children and grandchildren at their home in Ngorika and even held a memorial service for a grandson who died ten years ago.

His body was moved from home to a funeral home in Nakuru town, Nakuru County, as burial arrangements kick off.

The Mau Mau Rebellion was a militant uprising in British rule in Kenya between 1952 and 1960 and was primarily led by the Kikuyu-dominated Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA).

Despite military defeat by Britain, the rebellion hastened Kenya’s independence in 1963 by rendering the colony untenable.
