President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged government support to redevelop the historic Mucwa Building in Fort Portal into a multi-purpose cultural heritage and legacy centre, in partnership with the Tooro Kingdom.
The commitment was made on Friday following a meeting at Rwakitura between President Museveni and a delegation from the Tooro Kingdom led by Prime Minister Omuhikirwa Calvin Armstrong Rwomire. The delegation also included the Deputy Prime Minister and the kingdom’s ministers responsible for youth and tourism.
According to President Museveni, the redevelopment will focus on preserving Tooro’s cultural heritage while creating a space that supports youth engagement, promotes tourism, and contributes to the region’s economic sustainability.
“The government will support the redevelopment of the historic Muchwa Building into a multi-purpose legacy centre to preserve Tooro’s cultural heritage, support youth engagement, promote tourism, and ensure economic sustainability,” Museveni said in a statement shared after the meeting.
Located in Fort Portal City, the Mucwa Building is considered a significant historical site within the Tooro Kingdom. Plans to redevelop it are expected to transform the structure into a cultural and tourism hub that showcases Tooro’s history, traditions, and identity, while also providing opportunities for young people and local enterprises.
The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to promote cultural tourism and heritage preservation as drivers of regional development and job creation.
Further details on the scope, funding, and timeline of the redevelopment are expected to be announced following consultations between the central government and Tooro Kingdom authorities.
