Two men have been arrested in Tororo District for allegedly impersonating officials of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and demanding Shs10 million from people facing arrest in corruption-related investigations.
The suspects allegedly told a complainant that they were representatives of the anti-corruption unit and could secure bond for people arrested during investigations linked to Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi’s anti-corruption campaign.
The complainant reportedly paid the suspects Shs1 million as an initial instalment.
Investigators later arrested the two at the Procurement Office of Tororo Municipal Council, where the money was reportedly recovered.
The suspects are being held at Tororo Central Police Station as investigations continue.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit has warned the public against individuals claiming to collect money on its behalf, saying no person is authorised to solicit or demand payments from the public in the unit’s name.
The arrests come amid anti-corruption operations in Tororo linked to Minister Balaam’s “Expose the Corrupt in Local Government” campaign, which has focused on alleged irregularities involving the Parish Development Model, public payroll and government funds.
In June, four other people were arrested in Tororo in a separate case for allegedly impersonating State House Anti-Corruption Unit officials in connection with a land matter.
