Entebbe — The remains of Tooro King Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV have arrived at Entebbe International Airport, marking the beginning of the final journey home for the 34-year-old monarch.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was at the airport on Friday to pay his last respects to the King, alongside Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, Tooro Kingdom Premier Calvin Rwomiire Akiiki, cultural leaders, government officials and mourners.
A sombre atmosphere engulfed the airport as the casket was received with a guard of honour before being prepared for the next stage of the journey.
King Oyo died in the United States on August 27, 2026, following medical treatment. His death ended a 31-year reign that began when he was only three years old.
Oyo was crowned Omukama of Tooro on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Olimi Kaboyo.
Because of his age, President Museveni, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Elizabeth Bagaya served as regents during his childhood.
Princess Bagaya, the King’s aunt, was particularly involved in guiding the young monarch during his early years.
President Museveni has directed that King Oyo receive an official burial and that the national flag be flown at half-mast for three days around the burial.
From Entebbe, the remains are expected to be flown to Kyegegwa before being transported by road through Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo and Kabarole to Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.
The route has been adjusted to allow thousands of Tooro subjects to line the roads and pay their final respects to a King they first knew as a child.
Oyo is expected to be buried at the Karambi Royal Tombs on September 12—the same date he was crowned 31 years ago.
A child was carried to the throne in 1995.
Three decades later, the kingdom is carrying him home.
