BUTA¬LEJA — The former Butaleja District Local Council V chairperson, Higenyi Micheal Bory, has been remanded to September 1, 2026, after being charged with obtaining money by false pretences.
Higenyi was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Butaleja on Thursday by the Anti-Corruption Unit of State House, working with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The prosecution alleges that Higenyi collected millions of shillings from job applicants during recruitment exercises conducted between 2021 and January 2026, when he served as Butaleja District LCV chairperson.
According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, Higenyi allegedly promised several applicants that he would secure them jobs under Butaleja District Local Government in exchange for money.
Investigators say the promises were false.
The former district chairperson was remanded until September 1, 2026, when he is expected to return to court.
The case is part of investigations by the Anti-Corruption Unit into allegations of corruption and abuse of office arising from complaints concerning public recruitment and access to government jobs.
The allegations come amid increased scrutiny of the practice of demanding money from job seekers in exchange for government employment.
Authorities have repeatedly warned members of the public against paying individuals who claim they can influence recruitment into public service, where appointments are expected to follow established recruitment procedures.
Higenyi’s case remains before court, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
