NAKASEKE — Police in Nakaseke District have arrested 22 people after intercepting a taxi allegedly carrying hunting equipment and suspected wildlife products.

The suspects were arrested on August 17, 2026, at about 11pm when police officers operating a snap checkpoint stopped a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K.

According to police, the vehicle had 22 occupants and was carrying a number of items suspected to be connected to illegal hunting and possession of wildlife products.

Among the items recovered were hunting nets, spears, pangas, knives, roots and leaves of unidentified species, smoked and fresh suspected wild meat, three pairs of oribi horns, five bushbuck horns and porcupine quills.

Police said the items were secured as exhibits and all 22 occupants were arrested and detained.

The suspects are expected to be handed over to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for further management and investigations.

Police described the case as involving the alleged unlawful possession of wildlife species and suspected wildlife products.

The arrests come as Uganda continues to enforce laws against illegal hunting and trafficking of wildlife, activities that threaten wildlife populations and undermine conservation efforts.

Police did not identify the suspects or disclose where the alleged wildlife products were obtained. They also did not state whether the occupants were travelling together or establish their individual roles in the alleged offences.

The investigation is ongoing.
