IBANDA, Uganda — Residents of Ibanda Municipality have expressed concern over increasing piles of uncollected garbage, warning that poor waste management is putting public health and the environment at risk.
The waste, which has accumulated in different parts of the municipality, is being dumped in open drainage trenches and other undesignated areas, causing unpleasant smells and blocking water channels.
Residents say the irregular collection of garbage has left homes, businesses and public spaces struggling with waste disposal challenges. They fear the situation could worsen during the rainy season when blocked drainage systems may lead to flooding and the spread of contaminated water.
Silver Byamukama and Julius Nasasira, residents who raised concerns over the matter, said communities have been affected by inconsistent waste collection services and the growing presence of rubbish in public areas.
Ibanda Municipality Principal Health Inspector William Ndyanabo warned that poor sanitation increases the risk of diseases such as cholera, dysentery and other infections linked to improper waste disposal.
He urged residents and authorities to work together to improve sanitation standards and prevent possible disease outbreaks.
Environment Officer Robert Mwesigye said the problem is affecting not only urban cleanliness but also the environment, including wetlands and surrounding ecosystems. He called for improved waste collection infrastructure, public sensitisation and stronger enforcement of sanitation laws.
Concerns have also been raised over medical waste management at health facilities, including Ruhoko Health Centre IV, where delayed collection of waste could compromise safety standards.
The situation highlights broader challenges facing urban sanitation in Uganda, where many municipalities continue to struggle with limited resources, inadequate equipment and inconsistent waste collection systems.
Residents are now calling on Ibanda Municipal authorities to increase waste collection frequency, provide more disposal facilities and explore long-term solutions such as recycling and improved waste management planning.
They warn that without urgent intervention, the garbage problem could continue to threaten the health and wellbeing of residents.
