KAMPALA, Uganda — A group of activists has petitioned the office of the Inspector General of Government, seeking an investigation into allegations that some Ugandan diplomats and Foreign Service Officers serving in overseas missions may be holding foreign citizenship.
The petitioners argue that the allegations raise serious questions about constitutional compliance, national loyalty, and the integrity of Uganda’s diplomatic service.
According to the activists, diplomats are entrusted with representing Uganda’s interests abroad and handling sensitive state matters, responsibilities they say require undivided allegiance to the country.
In their petition, the activists have asked the IGG to verify the citizenship status of the officials concerned and establish whether any constitutional provisions, public service regulations, or diplomatic service rules have been breached.
They contend that officers involved in diplomatic negotiations, international engagements, and the management of government interests overseas should be subjected to the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
The petitioners further warn that uncertainty surrounding the nationality status of serving diplomats could erode public confidence in Uganda’s foreign service and potentially create conflicts of interest in the execution of official duties.
Should any violations be established, the activists are calling for appropriate legal and administrative action against the affected officials.
The matter has reignited debate over the eligibility of dual citizens to serve in sensitive government positions, particularly within Uganda’s diplomatic corps, where officers are expected to safeguard and advance the country’s interests on the international stage.
By Wednesday evening, neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the office of the Inspectorate of Government had publicly responded to the allegations.
The petition is expected to add pressure on authorities to clarify the legal position regarding dual citizenship and service in key government and diplomatic appointments.
