KIRA, Wakiso District — Police in Kira Division have arrested two suspects on allegations of human trafficking and rescued 17 young people who were reportedly recruited with promises of skills training and overseas employment opportunities.
The operation was conducted on June 9, 2026, at around 8:00 a.m. in Kiganda Zone, Kireka D, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality, following intelligence reports about suspected trafficking activities being carried out under the guise of an organization identified as “Alliance for Global.”
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala, the suspects have been identified as Edenyu Clement, 22, and Abungo Agnes, 19, both residents of Kiganda Zone, Kireka D, and reportedly coordinators of the organization.
Police said 17 victims, aged between 17 and 21 years, were rescued during the operation. The victims originate from several districts across the country, including Soroti, Serere, Moyo, Kumi, Amolatar, Amuria, Apac, Kole, Dokolo, Kalaki, Ngora and Lira.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were allegedly lured to Kampala with promises of training in nursing, tailoring and mechanics, as well as prospects of securing employment abroad.
However, police say the promised training and job opportunities were never provided.
Investigators further established that each victim was allegedly required to pay a registration fee of Shs400,000 as part of the recruitment process.
During the raid, police recovered the victims from eight rented rooms in Kiganda Zone, where they had reportedly been accommodated.
“The victims have since been reunited with their families, while the suspects remain in custody pending further investigations,” SP Kawala said.
Human trafficking remains a growing concern in Uganda, with law enforcement agencies frequently warning members of the public against fraudulent recruitment schemes that target young people seeking employment and training opportunities.
Police have urged job seekers to verify the credentials of recruitment agencies and organizations before making payments or accepting offers of employment, particularly those involving overseas placements.
The suspects are expected to face charges related to human trafficking if investigations establish sufficient evidence to support prosecution.
Police said inquiries into the activities of Alliance for Global and any possible accomplices are ongoing.
