Anita Rukundo Tayebwa has been appointed Honorary Consul of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in Uganda, with a focus on strengthening tourism and private-sector cooperation between the two countries.

Tayebwa presented her Letters of Credence to Foreign Affairs Minister Abubaker Jeje Odongo at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices in Kampala, according to a statement issued by the ministry on October 8.

During the meeting, Tayebwa pledged to promote closer ties between Uganda and The Bahamas, particularly by connecting tourism businesses in the two countries.

She highlighted the contribution of tourism to the Bahamian economy, which received more than 12.5 million tourists and earned approximately US$5.27 billion in tourism revenue in 2025.

Uganda, by comparison, received 1.64 million tourists and earned approximately US$1.62 billion from the sector during the same year, according to figures cited by the ministry.

The appointment is expected to support efforts to expand investment, trade, tourism and business relations between Uganda and The Bahamas.

The Bahamas, an island country in the Caribbean, relies heavily on tourism as a major source of economic activity. Uganda has also prioritised tourism as a source of foreign exchange and employment.

As Honorary Consul, Tayebwa is expected to help facilitate engagement between businesses and other stakeholders in the two countries, particularly in tourism and private-sector development.
