KAMPALA — Residents of Bamutakudde and neighboring villages in Kyampisi Sub-county, Mukono District, experienced a temporary, fully fledged hospital in their community over the weekend as investigative journalist Solomon Serwanjja’s foundation hosted a massive free health camp.
The weekend drive drew an overwhelming turnout of more than 700 people, including the elderly, youth, women, and men, who received free medical consultations, testing, treatments, and prescriptions.
More than 50 volunteer medical workers and specialists powered the day’s operations, setting up a structured multi-departmental clinic layout featuring a reception, waiting area, triage, and a general medicine desk.
Specialized care desks were heavily supported by institutional partners. Makerere University’s Lung Institute powered the respiratory and lung care desk, while Naggalama Hospital drove the gynecology clinic. Comprehensive lab testing, HIV/AIDS counseling, and testing were supported by Rotary Club of Bukoto, alongside dedicated stations for prostate cancer screening, ultrasound and imaging scans, and an eye care clinic offering free checks and prescription glasses powered by HAPA UG. A fully stocked pharmacy dispensed free medicines to patients throughout the day.
Expressing his joy over the community’s response, Serwanjja shared his gratitude on social media, praising team leads Alahai256 and Newton Allan, alongside every doctor, nurse, lab technician, volunteer, partner, and local mobilizer who contributed to the camp’s success.
The initiative left the community with renewed hope and sparked immediate local calls for regular outreach camps to sustain medical access in the rural sub-county.
