Makerere University has launched a review of its security and event management procedures following an incident in which a woman stripped during the 2026 Freshers’ Ball held at the university grounds.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the university clarified that the woman involved was a former student, distancing the institution from suggestions that she was a current member of the student community.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 31, during the university’s Freshers’ Ball, a public event that attracts students, alumni and members of the general public.
“Makerere University Management has noted with concern an incident involving our former student whose conduct during the Freshers’ Ball held on Saturday, 31st October 2026, at the University grounds, attracted public attention and generated widespread discussion,” the statement signed by Dean of Students Dr Winifred Kabumbuli reads.
The university said it does not condone behaviour that undermines the values, principles and standards expected of members of its community.
It added that it had initiated an immediate and comprehensive review of security and event management protocols for university-sanctioned social activities to prevent similar incidents.
“We have initiated an immediate, comprehensive review of the security and event management protocols for university-sanctioned social events to prevent a recurrence of such breaches,” Kabumbuli said.
The university also acknowledged an appeal by the woman’s family asking members of the public to stop circulating videos and photographs of the incident.
The footage had attracted widespread attention on social media, triggering debate about public conduct, event security and the responsibilities of organisers at university functions.
Makerere said it remained committed to providing a safe, inclusive and dignified environment for students, staff and other stakeholders.
The Freshers’ Ball, organised under the 92nd Students’ Guild, was held at Impis Rugby Grounds and featured performances by several Ugandan musicians, including Fik Fameica, Winnie Nwagi, Feffe Bussi, Azawi and Nina Roz.
The event had already attracted controversy following a separate confrontation between Fik Fameica and Guild President Gracious Kadondi, who interrupted the rapper’s performance to address students.
