KAMPALA, Uganda — Annet Nsimiire, a woman from Kikuube District who says a medical misdiagnosis cost her baby and uterus, is stranded at Kawempe National Referral Hospital because she cannot afford tests needed to assess her deteriorating kidney condition.

Nsimiire requires a medical test at Aga Khan Hospital estimated to cost Shs400,000, but she says she has been unable to raise the money. She has struggled to obtain even Shs50,000 to meet her immediate medical expenses.

She was referred to Kawempe National Referral Hospital by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) in Kibuli following interrogation, although the circumstances surrounding the investigation were not immediately clear.

Her situation has left her facing uncertainty over her health as financial constraints stand in the way of further medical assessment.

Nsimiire alleges that a previous medical misdiagnosis led to the loss of her baby and the removal of her uterus. The circumstances surrounding the alleged misdiagnosis, including when it occurred and the medical facility involved, were not immediately available.

Her current kidney condition requires further investigation to establish the extent of the problem and guide subsequent treatment.

The Shs400,000 test at Aga Khan Hospital remains beyond her means, while her inability to raise Shs50,000 highlights the financial difficulties she faces in accessing the care she needs.

Her case raises concerns about the challenges patients can face when they require specialised investigations that they cannot readily afford, even after reaching a public referral hospital.

Further details about her diagnosis, the treatment she has received at Kawempe National Referral Hospital and the nature of the CID interrogation were not immediately available.

The hospital, the medical facility involved in Nsimiire’s alleged earlier misdiagnosis and the relevant authorities had not provided responses to the claims in the information available for this report.
