Kyaggwe have won their first-ever Masaza Cup title after defeating five-time champions Gomba 1-0 in the final played on Saturday, October 31, at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
Substitute George Kato scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute to hand Kyaggwe victory in a closely contested encounter and end their wait for the prestigious Buganda Kingdom football trophy.
The victory marked a historic achievement for Kyaggwe, who lifted the trophy on their third appearance in the final.
Gomba, who were seeking to add to their five previous titles, were denied another triumph despite their experience in the competition. They have now appeared in 10 finals.
The final attracted a large crowd of football fans and was attended by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who congratulated Kyaggwe and handed over the trophy to the victorious team.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa was among the dignitaries who attended the match.
In a post on X, Tayebwa congratulated Kyaggwe and commended the competition for its contribution to cultural and social unity in Buganda.
“I enjoyed the game, the passion and the vibrant atmosphere created by supporters of both teams,” Tayebwa said.
He added that the Masaza Cup had been instrumental in nurturing football talent and strengthening social connections across the Buganda Kingdom.
Tayebwa also thanked Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga and kingdom officials responsible for organising the annual tournament.
Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary leader Joel Ssenyonyi also attended the final, congratulating Kyaggwe on their victory.
Kyaggwe’s triumph earns the county Shs25 million in prize money, while Godfrey Arijole was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The Masaza Cup is an annual football competition organised by Buganda Kingdom, bringing together teams representing the kingdom’s 18 counties. Beyond competition, the tournament has become a platform for promoting cultural identity, community participation and the development of football talent.
