A Uganda Premier League match between KCCA FC and UPDF FC was abandoned after a power outage disrupted play at Phillip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, Kampala.
The incident occurred during the match on October 22, 2026, when the stadium lost power, affecting the lighting needed for the game to continue.
KCCA FC apologised to its supporters, UPDF FC and other affected parties over the disruption, saying it would investigate the incident in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
The club is also awaiting a decision from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on the next steps, including whether the fixture will be rescheduled and whether any disciplinary action will follow.
Under FUFA rules governing matches affected by inadequate floodlighting, a referee may suspend play for a limited period to allow the problem to be resolved before abandoning the match if conditions remain unsuitable. The consequences may depend on the circumstances of the outage and whether responsibility can be attributed to the home team.
The incident has renewed attention on the reliability of power supply and backup systems at football venues, particularly those hosting matches scheduled for evening hours.
Stadium lighting is essential for the safe continuation of night fixtures, while reliable generators and maintenance systems can help minimise disruptions when the main power supply fails.
The abandonment also comes amid wider attention to stadium preparedness, with other Ugandan clubs highlighting their efforts to maintain floodlights and test backup generators ahead of evening matches.
FUFA’s decision is expected to clarify the status of the fixture and any action required from the clubs involved.
